Bolkestein wants to legalize all drugs
AMSTERDAM – All drugs should be made legal. This was defended by VVD-celebrity Frits Bolkestein (the Dutch liberals), former Minister of National Health Els Borst (D66, the Dutch social-liberal party) and professor in criminal law Theo de Roos argued in an opinion article that was published in NRC Handelsblad last Tuesday.

Other members of Bolkestein’s party are against legalization of drugs. D66 only wants to legalize soft drugs.

The supporters believe that, by lifting the ban on drugs, drug gangs will be chased away. And so the work pressure on the police and the judicial authorities would diminish by 10% or even more.

The authors also claim that the society would become more safe by legalizing drugs. The article is further subscribed to by a number of professors, lawyers and drug experts.

Unworkable

The authors claim the current tolerance policy on soft drugs to be “unworkable”. “Not one coffee shop can work on this. It only empowers the Public Prosecutor to ruin the coffee shops and that is what they are doing diligently the last couple of years.”

Another reason for the authors to legalize all kinds of drugs, is the public health. By legalization the quality of drugs would be guaranteed. “Drugs would be provided with information leaflets and information service would become trustworthy.” It should be noted that drugs cannot be sold to minors and foreigners.
